10 April Fools survival tips for game developers

aprilfools2022

April Fools’ Day has come and gone and, as usual, proved to be a rollercoaster of emotions. To spare our fellow jokers the shame of April 2nd finger pointing, we are happy to share our lessons learned.

Are you a game developer brave enough to ride the wave of insults, negative reviews, and threats, at the low cost of one legendary joke per year?

10 April Fools survival tips.

1. An April fools joke should be very obvious. Anything less goes over surprisingly many heads.

2. An April fools joke can't be obvious. That would make it lame.

3. Certain parts of the world have a monopoly on timezones. Be warned: you will be told what date it is in other parts of the world!

4. Little known fact: unlike the rest of the year, during the month of April people only read news titles. To prevent nasty surprises, consider titling your news post something like “This year's April Fools joke”.

5. Unconfirmed April Fools hoaxes are illegal…we have been told by people who have potentially been illegally fooled. We do not condone illegal hoaxing.

6. People will be eager to share a comment to let everyone know they saw through the joke. Don’t take this as ruining the fun! It’s simply a community service aimed at preventing unsanctioned bamboozling. Got your back, Jack!

7. Telling people they have been fooled makes things worse. When dealing with inevitable anger, it’s better to double down. On that note: yes, we are most definitely mining crypto coins on your PC when you play our game.

8. Don’t joke about crypto, don’t joke about drones and fish. Definitely don't joke about Will Smith's wife.

9. Don’t anger the fooled by making a post-mortem post with subtle references to real April Fools reactions.

10. “please stop laughing, this is not a funny at all.”
